Hi Folks,
Why not get your pack outdoors, get them seen in the community and get them enthused about contributing to the environment.
This activity is related to the following requirement:
BLACK STAR requirement A
Plant a Tree or Shrub, describe how trees grow and why they are important to nature.
How to conduct this activity
To conduct this activity, you need to call the City of Ottawa and ask for someone to come along to your group.
The contact in the City of Ottawa is Jennifer Sheppard at 613-580-2424 Extention 13771
You can also specify a location you want to plant trees or shrubs. The City of Ottawa will research the site that you have asked and either approve or suggest another site nearby.
Activity night
The city of Ottawa representative will turn up and do the following:
a) Provide trees or shrubs for the youth to plant
b) Talk to the youth about the types trees and shrubs they will plant
c) Tell the youth about the important plants play in the environment
d) Mark out where the trees/shrubs will be planted
e) Help guide the youth as they plant trees
f) Show the youth how to water the trees/shrubs after they are planted
Timeline
Please try to arrange the visit at least three months in advance as this allows the city to reasrch the site to see if tree or shrub planting can be done as well as contact the residents near where this activity will take place.
Other activities that you can do
Make up signs with a stake and have the youth sign their name and scout group
Take a photo of the tree/shrub with the youth and then see if you can get the pictures published in the local paper
What you need to bring along
Leaders need to bring shovel, lots of water
