Hi Folks,
This message provides a set of ideas that you can use to help your pack earn the Hiking badge.
GREEN STAR: HIKING BADGE
This posting provides the following:
a) Badge requirements
b) Suggested activities for the youth to accomplish this badge
This is one of the easiest badges to earn within the Green Star and it also allows leaders a wide range of opportunities for the cubs to earn this badges.
See the list of attachments with this message to provide ideas.
Examples:
1) Plan for at least 4 hikes in your yearly program. One Fall, Winter and Spring hike will add variation and points of discussion that will provide good learning opportunities for the youth and leaders.
2) Plan for at least one hike at a weekend camp. If you go away for a camp – why not explore the surrounding area.
3) Plan one hike at a local conservation area – again this provides a great educational experience for the cubs
4) Do one night hike – and plan to do “Deer Spotting†or GPS Cache hunting to add different twists to keep the youth engaged
OTHER COMPLEMENTARY BADGES
Hiking involves a wide variety of elements – and seriously if all you do is hike – as interesting as it may be, the cubs could get bored – so why not include other cub badges as part of your hike activities. Try these ideas, you may find that you can cover all or some of these badges requirements as you do your hiking
1) Cooking badge – have the youth hike and then do some cooking
2) Trailcraft badge – this badge covers what to do when preparing for a trip/wearing appropriate clothing/what to do when lost etc…
3) World Conservation badge – this badge requires a visit to a conservation area, animal and water habitats etc…
4) Astronomy badge – go on a night hike and if the weather cooperates – look at the stars and point out key items
5) Photographer – if you have cubs who are allowed to use cameras – have them take pictures and make a collage of their photos and talk about their hike
6) First Aider – learn how to treat ailments such as cuts, insect bites, hypothermia/hyperthermia etc...
If you have other activity ideas or web links that are useful for this badge, please send me the information and I will update the resources for this badge.
