Hi Folks,

Have you taken your cubs on a night hike and gone stalking / hunting deer? This is a program idea that we run every year due to the enthusiasm of our pack youth.

The youth cannot earn their hiking badge with this activity alone - however it does fulful most of the requirements and can be counted as one of the hiking activities.

GREEN STAR: Hiking Badge
Cub book: Page 80

Badge Requirements
1. Know how to take care of your feet for everyday walking, hiking, through washing, toenail clipping, wearing clean, dry socks and having proper fitting shoes.
2. Know how to treat a blister on the foot, insect bites, hypothermia, overheating and discuss the importance of getting adequate rest while hiking.
3. Discuss some safety rules for hiking and trail etiquette such as:
• staying with the group and using a buddy system
• keeping to designated trails
• keeping the group together
• having enough drinking water and food
• carrying a first aid kit, whistle and spare clothes
4. Describe what to do if lost.
5. Know some rules for protecting nature when hiking.
6. Go on four hikes of one to two hours long, some of which could be in a conservation area or park, around your camp, around your community, or at night.
7. Prepare a nutritional trail mix to eat and share.

DEER TRACKING LOCATION
This activity takes place at the "Old Quarry Trail" in Kanata. The location of this trail ideally suited to youth as it is 2.7 Km in length and has a large car park for assembly and for Hot Chocolate relief after the event. Better still, the trails are gravel and offer plenty of little side trails into the woods where the deer reside.

The "Old Quarry Trail" is situated at the junction of Hazeldean Road and Eagleson Road (Opposite the Hazeldean Shopping Mall).

Reports from the NCC indicate that the "Old Quarry Trail" is home to over 100 deer.

Activity Requirements:
Prior to this activity gather your pack together and talk to them about requirements 1 to 5 and requirement 7. You do not want to do this on the night of the activity as the kids will be too excited to listen to your instructions.

In the week prior to this activity, email your parents with the location and time of your event and ask them to prepare their youth with the following:
• Flashlight
• Garbage bag with holes for head and arms
• Chocolate bar and/or trail mix for nutrition
• Whistle
• Water bottle

LEADERS MUST ENSURE THE FOLLOWING
a) Cell phones to contact each other OR
b) FRS Radios to maintain contact with each other
c) Map of trail and an understanding of the route that each six will take
d) All of the above elements that the youth are asked to bring
e) First Aid kit

ACTIVITY NIGHT- check things once more
Gather the cubs and then split them into their sixes
Each six must be accompanied by two adults (one of which must be a leader)
Ensure one or more adults with first Aid are attending this activity with appropriate First Aid kit
Perform headcount of youth and adults

HOW TO SEARCH FOR DEER
1) Leaders and six groups depart along trails with each going in different directions
2) Leaders lead each six along gravel path and then leave the path into the woods.
3) Leaders and youth turn on their flashlights to see if they can spot the deer
** NOTE **
The eyes of the deer will reflect light. Once a deer has been caught in the light it will remain still for a few moments allowing the youth to spot the deer

** KEY NOTES **
Keep all of the six groups separate and try to encourage the youth to keep the noise down - The deer will hear the youth and disappear along time before the youth can see them

ACTIVITY CHALLENGE
You can make this hiking activity a challenge between six groups as follows:
1) 5 points are awarded for each deer that has been spotted (verified by a leader)
2) 2 points for each squirrel / Wild Turkey that is spotted
3) For fun ** 100 points ** for each bear they spot
4) 10 points for ambushing another pack

ADDING FURTHER CHALLENGE
If you spot another six heading your way - then have your six group hide in the woods just off the trail and then do the following:
1) Allow the six group to pass you by without being spotted
2) Ambush the six from behind
3) 10 points can be awarded for each ambush

End of the Activity
1) Perform headcount to ensure ALL the youth, leaders and parents are present
2) Check the number of points each pack has won and declare a winner

EMERGENCY/ACTION PLAN
I have a detailed emergency / action plan for this activity. If this is of interest to you, please email me scouterpyd@rogers.com and I can share this plan with you.

SUPPORTING PROGRAM IDEA
Click on this link and consider running a "Lost in the Woods" program night for your pack. It will help drill into your youth what to do if they are lost in the woods.

If you have any other ideas for creative hiking, please let me know at scouterpyd@rogers.com so I can post it for others to enjoy.
