Hi Folks,

This message provides a set of ideas that you can use to help your pack earn the Guide badge.

BLUE STAR: GUIDE BADGE
This posting provides the following:
a) Badge requirements
b) Suggested activities for the youth to accomplish this badge

This badge has great potential for teaching the cubs the importance of good communication, maturity for handlng 911 calls and how to react appropriately to strangers.

This badge can be earned both through activities at home, guest speakers and outdoor activities. These activity ideas are listed in the attached files.

NOTE: File attachment "Guide-badge-Orienteering.pdf" is an excellent outdoor activity for the Guide badge. this program was put together by Eagle pack in Stittsville. A brief synopsis is written by Mike Leeder:

FYI - attached is an Orienteering program we did tonight in Eagle Pack. It worked out well.... so I thought I would share.

Each Six met at a different location in Stittsville. They were given a 15-20 minute overview and practice using compasses and GPS, and then had to follow a set of bearings and instructions to find their way to a "secret destination" . To make sure the destination remained a secret, I did not tell parents the pick-up location in advance. The final destination was at the firepit, where one of our leaders was waiting with a fire and hot choc.

Each route was a little over 1 km in length, and took the kids about 40 minutes to complete. The kids (and adults) made a few mistakes at the start, but by the end were all using compasses correctly. They also found the GPS interesting, but they were more interested in the compasses.

I have provided maps and compass instructions in the attached document. I will not delete the routes from the GPS receivers

If you have other activity ideas or web links that are useful for this badge, please send me the information and I will update the resources for this badge.
